This weeks Dusk Dubs mixtape comes from DJ Matter. One of the main record spinners and party starters from Manchester's Coded Rhythm. For a crew that brings the likes of Loefah, Evian Christ, Lone and Nightmares On Wax to name a few to their nights, its a real honour to have Matter select some records for Dusk Dubs. Having a very varied taste, from pure hip-hop turntablism all the way to beautifully crafted ambient techno, its always a pleasure chatting tunes with him. Matter has taken the Dusk Dubs ethos and created an incredible mixtape. There is a real feel of history in this.
You can also catch him on the decks at our first live event on 15th May in the Deaf Institute Basement in Manchester (CLICK HERE)
Here are a few words from the man himself...
Firstly I’d like to say a massive thanks to Dusk Dubs by honouring me with the task of being the maestro for this weeks show. My music selection for this play list is mainly Jazz hip-hop beat based tracks intertwined with some trip hop and reggae.
Looking back on what got me into the love of djing and record collecting will always be an easy question to answer, hip-hop and dnb, Music that gets me moving in so many ways whether it be the daft screw face from a filthy dnb bass or a ridiculous flow from your favourite mc that would resonate with you in some form, either way I was hooked. Roll on to present day, my musical selection has broadened so much, playing out Techno, Garage, Grime, House, Disco and Funk at Coded Rhythm. I’m very much a dj who doesn’t like to pigeon hole themselves to one genre and even though I don’t get to play it out as much as I would like the one genre that has remained a constant in what I follow and listen too has always been hip-hop. Whether it be the mc’s, producers, art, fashion, or turntablism the rich tapestry, history and culture of hip hop runs so deep which for me makes it the most interesting genre of music and over the years we have witnessed the UK hip hop scene growing and developing leaps and bounds to the point where I now relish the fact there are so many decent underground hip hop acts from the UK and more importantly from Manchester, with the likes of Room2Records, LVLZ, Kydro, Metrodome, Rich Reason giving a platform for some of the best up and coming and established MC’s and producers from the area the scene has never been stronger.
